From Hammer to Blade: Crafting My Own Yakut Knife
I’ve always been fascinated by knife forging, ever since watching Forged in Fire. Despite my growing interest, I never had the tools or knowledge to pursue it safely. When I came across Andreas’ course at AK University, it was exactly what I’d been searching for—a one-on-one class focused solely on forging a knife from scratch.
The experience was incredibly rewarding. Andreas guided me through every step, from heat-treating the metal to shaping the blade and crafting the handle. One of my favorite parts was forging a square piece of metal into a Yakut knife—a unique design we tackled together. Watching the blade take shape hammer by hammer was a deeply satisfying process.
The hands-on learning was challenging but enjoyable. Andreas made sure the class was engaging and tailored to my pace. The 8-hour forging days flew by, and I left not only with a robust, custom-made knife but also with newfound confidence, especially after overcoming initial fears like using the belt grinder.
This course exceeded my expectations. I can’t recommend it enough to anyone wanting to craft their own knife—it’s an experience I’ll never forget.
